Fletcher’s Jamal Hutchison Qualifies for U.S. Amateur Championship
ASHEVILLE, NC — The Asheville Buncombe Regional Sports Commission congratulates Fletcher native Jamal Hutchison on qualifying for the 126th U.S. Amateur Championship, one of the most prestigious events in amateur golf.
Hutchison secured his place with an outstanding performance at the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, North Carolina. He carded a two-under-par 70 to finish seventh in the final qualifier, earning one of the event’s 10 available championship berths.
His road to the U.S. Amateur began in June at a local qualifier in Southern Pines, where he shot a five-under-par 67 and tied for fourth to advance. His strong play across both qualifying stages now gives him an opportunity to compete alongside the nation’s top amateur golfers.
A Word from Jamal
Jamal Hutchison reflected on earning his first U.S. Amateur appearance and the opportunity ahead:
“Qualifying for the U.S. Amateur means a great deal to me. This will be my first USGA championship, and I’m excited for the opportunity to compete on such a prestigious stage.
“I shot two under in the qualifier, and one under ended up being the qualifying number. I hadn’t been watching the leaderboard, so I didn’t know exactly where I stood coming down the stretch. I stayed focused on my game, and fortunately, it all worked out.
“I’m looking forward to competing against some of the best amateur golfers in the world and seeing how my game measures up. Hopefully, I can play well and bring home the trophy.”

Hutchison’s golf journey is firmly rooted in Western North Carolina. The Fletcher native attended Christ School in Arden and gained valuable experience working as a caddie at Biltmore Forest Country Club before continuing his academic and athletic career at North Carolina Central University.

Now a rising senior at NCCU, Hutchison has established himself as one of the program’s most accomplished golfers. He was named the 2024 Black College Golf Coaches Association Outstanding Freshman and has earned two individual collegiate tournament victories.
In 2025, Hutchison captured the Arcis HBCU Championship with a four-under-par performance. He also became the first NCCU golfer to earn All-Northeast Conference honors and was selected to the NEC All-Tournament Team. His collegiate résumé includes consecutive NEC Golfer of the Week awards and several additional top finishes in prominent HBCU and intercollegiate events.
The 126th U.S. Amateur Championship will be contested August 10–16, 2026, at historic Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pennsylvania. Philadelphia Country Club will co-host the opening stroke-play rounds. The championship begins with a field of 312 golfers before advancing the top 64 players to match play.
Merion has hosted more USGA championships than any other club, making Hutchison’s first U.S. Amateur appearance an especially memorable milestone.
